Xbox gamertag rules
Modern Xbox gamertags can be up to 12 characters and may contain letters, numbers and spaces. If someone already has your gamertag, Xbox adds a number suffix (like Jaxen#4821) so the full tag is unique. Your first gamertag change is free; later changes usually cost money.
Your gamertag is also your name in Minecraft Bedrock Edition and many other games on Xbox and PC Game Pass.
Why short gamertags win on Xbox
Twelve characters go fast. That's why this page starts with the short & punchy style, which makes compact names like Jaxen or Vexa. Two short words in CamelCase, like VoltRook or HexNomad, also fit well. Long phrase-names usually get cut.
Tips
- Count before you fall in love. CobaltWraith is exactly 12; anything longer won't fit.
- Use the space. Xbox allows spaces, so Frost Ronin is possible, but it may look different in games that remove spaces.
- Want no suffix? Try rarer word pairs. Common words like Shadow or Dark are almost always taken.
- Keep your free change in mind. If you're unsure, wait until you've found a tag you really like.
Naming rules on games and platforms change from time to time. The limits on this page were correct when it was written; always check the current rules on the sign-up or rename screen. NameLaunchpad never checks whether a name is free.
