How engagement rate is calculated

Engagement rate shows what share of your audience interacts with a post. There are three common formulas:

  • By followers: engagements ÷ followers × 100. The standard for comparing accounts, and what brands usually ask for.
  • By views: engagements ÷ views × 100. Better for Reels, TikTok and YouTube, where many viewers do not follow you.
  • By reach: engagements ÷ accounts reached × 100. Only you can see reach in your insights, and it gives numbers around ten times higher than the follower formula.

The calculator counts likes, comments, shares and saves on Instagram and TikTok, likes and comments on YouTube, and likes, comments and shares or reposts on Facebook and X. To average several posts, add up their numbers and enter how many posts they are.

What is a good engagement rate in 2026?

Averages for brand accounts, by followers, from Socialinsider's 2026 benchmark study of 70 million posts:

  • TikTok: 2.50% (down from 3.70% in 2025)
  • Instagram: 0.45%
  • Facebook: about 0.14%
  • X: about 0.10%

Creators usually reach higher rates than brands, and small accounts higher rates than large ones: engagement falls as follower count grows. The rating in the calculator compares your result with the brand average: below half of it is low, up to one and a half times is average, up to three times is good and above that is excellent. YouTube has no comparable public benchmark, so compare your own videos with each other there.

Example

An Instagram post on an account with 12,500 followers gets 480 likes, 36 comments, 12 shares and 25 saves. That is 553 engagements, and 553 ÷ 12,500 × 100 = 4.42%, nearly ten times the brand average.

How to improve your engagement rate

  • Ask a real question in the caption or the first seconds of a video; comments weigh more than likes for most algorithms.
  • Make content worth saving, such as checklists, recipes and tutorials. Saves and shares signal value.
  • Reply to comments in the first hour; conversations keep a post active.
  • Clean out fake followers. Bought or inactive followers lower the rate because they never interact.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about engagement rates.

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

For brand accounts the 2026 average is about 0.45% by followers. Creators often reach 1 to 5%, and small accounts more. Anything above the average means your content resonates.

What is a good engagement rate on TikTok?

The 2026 average for brand accounts is about 2.5% by followers. Because many TikTok viewers do not follow you, also check the rate by views.

Should I calculate engagement by followers or by views?

By followers to compare accounts and for brand deals, by views for videos and Reels. Always compare results that use the same formula.

Do saves and shares count as engagement?

Yes on Instagram and TikTok, where they are strong signals. Some benchmarks only count likes and comments, so their averages can be a little lower.
