What makes a good username
Your handle shows up everywhere: in profile links, mentions, photo tags and friend requests. The goal is a username people can find after hearing it once.
- Keep it short. Under about 15 characters is easier to type, read in a mention and fit on a business card.
- Make it spellable. Avoid unusual spellings and awkward joins where letters double up, such as frostttide.
- Use one handle everywhere. The same name across platforms makes you easy to find. Generate a few, then check each platform.
- Choose separators carefully. Dots and underscores help readability (golden.fern), but people forget them. If you use one, use the same everywhere.
- Protect your privacy. Do not combine your full name with your birth year or city.
Pick a username style
Aesthetic & soft pairs gentle words such as misty, sage or lunar with nature and everyday objects. Personal brand wraps short prefixes like "its", "hey" or "the", or endings like studio, hq and daily, around a word; enter your name or nickname in the include field to try it. Creator & hobby says what you do, for example pebblecreates or mochibakes. Playful & funny is perfect for alt accounts, gaming Discords and group chats.
Worked example: one handle for every platform
Maya draws and posts timelapse videos. She types "Maya" into the include field and chooses the creator style. Ideas such as mayasketches and itsmayadraws appear. She saves mayasketches as her first choice, turns on separators to save maya.sketches as a backup, and checks both on every platform she plans to use. If one network already has the first choice taken, she switches to the backup everywhere instead of using a different name on each.
Platform notes
Username rules differ: some services allow dots, some only underscores, and length limits vary, often somewhere between 15 and 30 characters. Rules also change over time. A lowercase handle without symbols works almost anywhere, so add separators or numbers only when you need them.
Frequently asked questions
Does this username generator check availability?
No. It creates ideas offline in your browser and never contacts any social network. Search the handle on each platform before you use it.
How can I put my name in the username?
Type your name or nickname into "Include a word". The generator combines it with prefixes, endings or hobby words, for example itsmaya or mayasketches.
Should I use dots or underscores?
Use them only if they make the name easier to read or the clean version is taken. If you use a separator, stick to the same one on every platform so people can find you.
What is a good length for a username?
Between about 6 and 15 characters works well. Shorter handles are easier to mention and remember, and they are less likely to hit platform limits.
Are my favorites stored anywhere?
Only in your own browser via local storage. Your favorites are never sent to a server, and clearing your browser data removes them.
