PSN Online ID rules
A PlayStation Network Online ID is 3 to 16 characters long and can use letters, numbers, hyphens (-) and underscores (_). It has to start with a letter and must be unique. You can change your Online ID in your account settings; the first change is free and later changes cost a fee.
Some older games don't handle renamed IDs well, so PlayStation lets you show your old ID next to the new one for a while.
Picking a PSN name
- Use the hyphen and underscore. If FrostRonin is taken, Frost-Ronin or Frost_Ronin might not be.
- Think about trophies. Your ID sits on your trophy list and profile forever. A clean name ages better than a joke.
- Match your other platforms. If you also play on PC or Xbox, try to get the same name everywhere so friends can find you.
- Start with a letter. Names starting with a number or symbol are not allowed.
Styles
The tech & sci-fi style (NeonPulse, NovaByte) fits shooters and futuristic games. Edgy names like SilentTalon fit action and souls-likes. Funny names like CaptainNoodle are perfect for party games and co-op with friends.
Naming rules on games and platforms change from time to time. The limits on this page were correct when it was written; always check the current rules on the sign-up or rename screen. NameLaunchpad never checks whether a name is free.
