Minecraft username rules
Minecraft: Java Edition usernames are 3 to 16 characters long and may only use letters, numbers and the underscore. Spaces, dots and other symbols are not allowed. Bedrock Edition uses your Xbox gamertag instead, so the Xbox gamertag rules apply there.
That's why this generator builds names without spaces, in CamelCase like FrostRonin. If you turn on symbols, only use the underscore when you register.
What makes a good Minecraft name
- Readable in chat. Server chat is fast. Two short words in CamelCase are easier to read than a string of random letters.
- Easy to type for /msg and /tp. Friends will type your name in commands. Avoid look-alike characters such as I and l, or 0 and O.
- Fits your play style. Builders like calm or nature words, PvP players go for edgy names, and SMP roleplayers often pick a character name.
- Works on every server. Some servers filter rude words in names. A clean name never gets you kicked by a filter.
Name ideas by play style
PvP and minigames: the edgy style gives names like SilentTalon or CobaltWraith. Survival and building: try a nature word in the "Include a word" field, such as Moss, Oak or Stone, for names like MossyGolem. Funny SMP characters: switch to the funny style for GrumpyWaffle or SoggyPenguin. Short names: the short style makes compact names like Jaxen, but very short names are more likely to be taken.
Changing your Minecraft name
Java Edition lets you change your name in your Minecraft profile, with a waiting period between changes. Your old name stays reserved for a while before others can take it. Servers usually track you by your account ID, so your progress stays, but friends need to learn the new name.
Naming rules on games and platforms change from time to time. The limits on this page were correct when it was written; always check the current rules on the sign-up or rename screen. NameLaunchpad never checks whether a name is free.
